HEAVY CIVIL - Aurora Prairie Waters
The fast growing Denver suburb of Aurora, CO realized that it must find more raw water to meet future needs. Sources of dependable raw water on the eastern slopes of the Rockies are hard to find. The source point identified was the Platte River North Campus to the Aurora Reservoir which is 34 miles away. An ultimate capacity of 96 MGD is required.
Layne recognized that the 34 mile pipeline route had construction issues: high groundwater, unstable soils, public and private rights of way, numerous environmentally sensitive zones and wildlife habitats.
Construction requirements included furnish and installation of approximately 12.8 miles of 60” diameter epoxy coated, mortar lined steel cylinder pressure water pipeline. Included are 10 tunneled crossings with 4-78” Micro Tunnels, 2-78” TBM's, and 2-78” Hand Tunnels.
Extensive planning on construction techniques in environmentally sensitive areas, phased installation to meet restricted times and deployment of some of the largest construction equipment for this type of work in the United States.
